During the summer and fall of 2021 I had an internship working at Christian Bülow Holding ApS., helping them in conceptualizing and designing their product - My True Value. My True Value is a therapeutic mobile application created to help people gain more self-esteem and self-worth.
After the internship, I continued working for My True Value as a freelancer.
Problem statement:
‘How can conceptualization be used to increase the chance of success for My True Value?’
Target groups:
- Christian Bülow Holding ApS. (client, primary)
- Women in need of improving self-esteem (secondary)
This project was structured based on an agile work environment similar to the scrum framework.
Creating An Identity
My first task during this project was to create a visual identity for My True Value. This involved the conceptualization of a product mascot (called Peach), creating a color scheme, agreeing on a typeface and several other steps.
My work in this phase was therefore closely related to the work of the team's graphic designer, as our work would intertwine in multiple stages of interaction.
Product Design
After the visual identity had been created, I began my task of designing the application itself. During this process it was essential to consider the usability of the product, and thus, a huge emphasis was put on considering aspects of both UX and UI design.
Wireframing and mockups were used as rapid prototypes in my conversation with the project’s stakeholders. This made it easy to gain feedback and to make design changes simultaneously with the design process.
Once the design had been agreed upon, I began creating a full fledged prototype of the product, which would later be shared with the developer of the mobile application.
Website and SEO
Once the application product design had been finished and sent to the developer, I began the creation of a website for the client. This involved a thorough investigation on which programming language and platform the website should be made. In the end it was chosen to create the website using HTML, CSS and JavaScript, as this was the best fit to the clients needs and wants for the website.
During this phase, my main role was in designing the UX and UI aspects of the website, along with being in charge of the front-end development. Wireframing and mockups were therefore also a huge part of this process.
After the creation of the website, I focused on improving the SEO for the website, to ensure high results for the four parameters; Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices and SEO. This was done both for the mobile version and the desktop version of the website.
HTML5 Banner Ads
Another task of mine was to create HTML5 banners for the UAC (Universal App Campaigns) for Google Adwords. Since I had no previous knowledge about HTML5 banner ads I had to do extensive research to gain the required knowledge to perform this task and create something useful. In this regard I was introduced to Google Web Designer, a tool provided by Google for creating interactive HTML5 ads. Google Web Designer works as a drag-and-drop tool and is quite similar to Adobe Premiere Pro in its handling of creating interactions and animations.
User Tests
As part of the testing of the My True Value application, a handful of user tests were conducted. The main focus of these tests were to explore the user behavior when interacting with the product.
Interviews were conducted on four test users of women between the age of 20-50, and their answers were later analyzed in an affinity diagram.
Improving The Product
After the user tests and additional feedback from app store and google play, I started conceptualizing on improvements to My True Value. This was primarily focused on improvements to the main page of the application, aimed at putting an emphasis on the visual identity, in an attempt to create a ‘world’ which the user would interact with.
Result
This project resulted in the creation of a visual identity for My True Value, ensuring cohesion between the application, website and other components of the product. Furthermore, was the product design during the project used to create a better product for the end-user.
